What happened
President Donald Trump is seeking local approval to designate Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, as a permanent presidential retreat similar to Camp David. In a letter to Palm Beach County commissioners, golf-course attorney Harvey Oyer proposed naming it a “U.S. Presidential Golf Course,” with the club paying to build presidential lodging and offering free access to current and future presidents and visiting heads of state. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that the military and Secret Service suggested the idea, that it would be for all future presidents rather than for him, and that he supports it. The Trump Organization leases the land from Palm Beach County, which would have to approve any change. A White House official said the government has asked to look into developing a retreat there so presidents can hold meetings and use the property.
Sourcing check · Fully on the record · 3 articles
2 of 2 articles cite a named source for the story. It was on the record from the first report.
What these terms mean and how they're counted
- On the record · names a source 2 of 2
- On the record means the article cites a source by name for the story's main claim: a person, or an institution speaking officially, such as a company statement or a named agency's spokesperson. The opposite is an unnamed source. The count is how many of the counted articles cite at least one such source; the names are everyone named across them, each once however the articles spell it. Here: Donald Trump
- Primary evidence · cites a document or data 1 of 2
- Primary evidence means the article cites a record you could check yourself: a court filing or ruling, a dataset or report, a recording or transcript, an official statement or press release, market data. A quote is not a document. The count is how many articles cite one. Here: letter, official proposal
- Credits another outlet 0 of 2
- The article says the story comes from another outlet's reporting (“first reported by Reuters”). Those articles relay the story; they are not independent confirmation. Here: Each article presents its own reporting.
- Unnamed sources 0 of 2
- The main claim is attributed to people who are not identified: “people familiar with the matter”, “officials said”. The count is how many articles do this.
- How it developed
- When the first report landed and whether it named anyone; when the first named source and the first document appeared. Here: First report Oct 8, 03:00 UTC by BBC, naming its source. First document within the hour, from ABC News (letter).
- Not counted 1
- Opinion, analysis and video pieces, and articles too short to assess. Every count above is out of the counted articles. An article republished under a new headline is one article.

Only left-leaning outlets are covering this story
— the other side's media is silent.
Omitted — what each side leaves out
Unpacked
Right-leaning outlets had not covered this as of publication. Left-leaning coverage reports that Trump wants his West Palm Beach golf club designated a presidential retreat, with the club offering to build lodging as a gift on land the county owns. Trump said the military and Secret Service suggested it and that the site would serve future presidents. A reader of the silent side would not know the proposal exists, or that Palm Beach County would have to approve handing over land.
Left-leaning coverage is not uniform on the club's security record. ABC News uniquely notes the same course saw an attempt on Trump's life, a striking episode NBC News omits, but no outlet argues that incident legally blocks the retreat.
Did the Secret Service ask Trump for a retreat at his club, or did the club's attorney offer the county one first?
Bottom line
NBC News has Trump's golf-club lawyer asking Palm Beach County to create a presidential retreat on the West Palm Beach course; right-leaning outlets have not covered that request.
The receipts — 5 facts one side's coverage lacks
- The West Palm Beach club earned Trump nearly $37 million during his first year back in office.
- Palm Beach County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo said local officials are eager to explore the plan as a historic opportunity.
- The golf club offered free memberships to future presidents and access to its facilities at no cost to the federal government.
- The golf course was the site of an unsuccessful attempt on Trump's life.
- President Trump said the military and Secret Service suggested the retreat and that it would be for all future presidents.
The Left View
Left-leaning outlets including The Hill, Bloomberg, NBC News, BBC, ABC News, and The New York Times report that Trump wants to convert his West Palm Beach golf club into a Camp David-style retreat. They describe Oyer’s letter offering the “U.S. Presidential Golf Course” designation, club-funded construction as a gift, and free memberships for future presidents; they quote Trump attributing the idea to Secret Service and the military. Coverage notes the county owns the leased land, places the plan among other Trump White House projects, and contrasts the club’s urban, social setting with rustic Camp David. Several stories mention a 2024 assassination attempt at the course. CBS News reported Trump’s pitch, the White House statement on location and security features, and prior Secret Service payments to stay at Trump properties.
Our Take (balanced)
The story is substantive: it is anchored in a named attorney’s letter to county commissioners, Trump’s on-the-record Oval Office comments, a White House official statement, and identifiable local officials. Established facts include the proposal itself, the request involving county-owned land, Trump’s claim that Secret Service and the military suggested it, and the club’s offer to fund lodging. Unconfirmed are whether Secret Service or the military originated the idea, full costs and legal terms of any land transfer, and whether the county or federal agencies will approve. No right-leaning outlet has reported this. Watch for the full Oyer letter, a Secret Service response, Palm Beach County commission action, and any formal federal request or cost details.
