What happened

On Friday evening, 45-year-old Matthew Stone opened fire at his home on Perry Street in Erie, Pennsylvania, killing eight people before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook identified the dead as Stone’s wife, Michelle Stone, 44; daughter Angelina K. Stone, 24, who was pregnant and due to give birth that Monday (she had posted a due date of October 14); sons Matthew Stone Jr., 21, and Jonathan Stone, 19; a related 5-year-old boy and nearly 2-year-old girl inside the house; and, outside, Twila A. Tanner, 51, and Lora Lee Roberts, 37, Michelle’s sister, who had come because Angelina needed a ride to the hospital. Alerted around 4:53 p.m. by ShotSpotter, Erie police found Tanner and Roberts fatally shot in the street, faced a barricaded house, and after a search warrant found the other victims inside; Chief Rick Lorah said investigators believed all were dead before officers arrived. Lorah said he believed “mental health is at play here” but that it was too early to determine a motive; relatives identified the young children as Angelina’s son Isiah and daughter Amari’anna, and a family fundraiser named the unborn child Kyrie.
Sourcing check · Mostly on the record · 4 articles

3 of 4 articles cite a named source for the story. It was on the record from the first report.

What these terms mean and how they're counted
On the record · names a source 3 of 4
On the record means the article cites a source by name for the story's main claim: a person, or an institution speaking officially, such as a company statement or a named agency's spokesperson. The opposite is an unnamed source. The count is how many of the counted articles cite at least one such source; the names are everyone named across them, each once however the articles spell it. Here: Lyell Cook, Christine Tombaugh, Juicesiyah Alexander Ezekiel, Lisa Simmers, Aaliyah Williams and Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah
Primary evidence · cites a document or data 0 of 4
Primary evidence means the article cites a record you could check yourself: a court filing or ruling, a dataset or report, a recording or transcript, an official statement or press release, market data. A quote is not a document. The count is how many articles cite one. Here: None cited.
Credits another outlet 0 of 4
The article says the story comes from another outlet's reporting (“first reported by Reuters”). Those articles relay the story; they are not independent confirmation. Here: Each article presents its own reporting.
Unnamed sources 0 of 4
The main claim is attributed to people who are not identified: “people familiar with the matter”, “officials said”. The count is how many articles do this.

Opinion, analysis and video pieces, and articles too short to assess. Every count above is out of the counted articles. An article republished under a new headline is one article.

Unpacked

The two women shot outside are identified only in left-leaning coverage, which changes how far the killings reached beyond the household. Lora Lee Roberts had gone to the house because Angelina Stone needed a ride to the hospital, NBC News reports, and Twila Tanner came with her. That report establishes the two were not already inside with the family. Right-leaning coverage does not name those women or mention the hospital request. A family friend is the only extra victim Fox News notes. Left-leaning coverage refers to "an unborn fetus." Right-leaning coverage names that child Kyrie and describes a mother about to have her baby. The difference is not another death. It is the label on the same one. Did police have any prior calls to the home before Friday?
Bottom line

Fox News and the New York Post never mention the hospital-ride request that NBC News says brought two women into the street during the Erie shooting.

The Left View
NBC News, citing the coroner, centered the gunman’s pregnant daughter and quoted Cook describing “an unborn fetus who was supposed to have been born today.” It devoted substantial space to Roberts’ homeless-advocacy work, with Community of Caring director Christine Tombaugh saying that answering a relative’s call and bringing a friend was “typical of her kindness” and that Roberts had “a giving spirit, a beautiful heart” and “a heart for the homeless and people in need.” Coverage also carried Ezekiel’s reaction that the killings were “sickening” and that he “wouldn’t even put this on [his] worst enemy.”
The Right View
The New York Post and Fox News headlined that Angelina was days from giving birth and treated her unborn child as a named victim, Kyrie, alongside Isiah and Amari’anna. They relayed relatives’ accusation of a “murder-suicide” by her father, Lisa Simmers’ statement that the two young children “were on the spectrum” and “couldn’t have told on that man if they wanted to,” and Lorah’s description of “the worst scene I have ever experienced.” Fox noted a GoFundMe for funeral costs; the Post quoted Ezekiel saying he had left Erie after surviving a 2022 homicide “to stay away from that lifestyle” and returned to lose his daughter and “baby mom.”
Our Take (balanced)
NBC’s strongest point is the coroner’s official identifications plus an on-the-record portrait of Roberts as a helper killed while answering a family medical call, evidenced by Tombaugh’s account of her homeless-advocacy “passion.” The Post and Fox’s strongest point is the imminent due date combined with the family’s naming of the unborn child, Simmers’ claim the preschoolers were “on the spectrum,” and Lorah’s mental-health comment—none of which the NBC account developed. The unresolved tension is whether the dead include a named, almost-born child and whether officials’ mental-health hint is the causal frame, or whether this is eight homicides described in the coroner’s clinical language, with community-helper victims at the center and no established motive.
