What happened

On April 2, 2025, teenager Karmelo Anthony fatally stabbed fellow teenager Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. Anthony was convicted of murder and sentenced to 35 years in prison; he has appealed. On May 8, 2026, prosecutors filed a 75-page notice of extraneous offenses they had sought to use at trial, citing text messages, photos, videos, and alleged prior threats and assaults attributed to Anthony, including exchanges with his then-girlfriend, Valeria Torres Perez. Those materials were not shown to the jury. Right-leaning outlets later obtained the filings and reported their contents.
Sourcing check · Rests on documents, no one quoted · 3 articles

No article quotes anyone; the reporting rests on court documents, court filing. It was on the record from the first report, credited to The Daily Mail. Most articles credit The Daily Mail rather than reporting it themselves.

What these terms mean and how they're counted
On the record · names a source 0 of 2
On the record means the article cites a source by name for the story's main claim: a person, or an institution speaking officially, such as a company statement or a named agency's spokesperson. The opposite is an unnamed source. The count is how many of the counted articles cite at least one such source; the names are everyone named across them, each once however the articles spell it. Here: No article does.
Primary evidence · cites a document or data 2 of 2
Primary evidence means the article cites a record you could check yourself: a court filing or ruling, a dataset or report, a recording or transcript, an official statement or press release, market data. A quote is not a document. The count is how many articles cite one. Here: court documents, court filing
Credits another outlet 1 of 2
The article says the story comes from another outlet's reporting (“first reported by Reuters”). Those articles relay the story; they are not independent confirmation. Here: The Daily Mail
Unnamed sources 0 of 2
The main claim is attributed to people who are not identified: “people familiar with the matter”, “officials said”. The count is how many articles do this.
How it developed
When the first report landed and whether it named anyone; when the first named source and the first document appeared. Here: First report Sep 8, 19:05 UTC by Breitbart, crediting The Daily Mail, naming its source. First document in the first report, from Breitbart (court documents).
Not counted 1
Opinion, analysis and video pieces, and articles too short to assess. Every count above is out of the counted articles. An article republished under a new headline is one article.
This is about who is cited, not whether the story is true. Each source below says what it names. How we count

Unpacked

The story of Karmelo Anthony's court texts is being told only on the right. Left-leaning coverage has not reported the filings. Right-leaning coverage says prosecutors listed racist messages, gun videos, and threats the murder jury never saw. A reader of left-leaning coverage never learns that this background stayed out of the trial that produced the 35-year sentence. Fox News notes the notice is not a judicial finding that the alleged acts occurred. Fox News leads with the girlfriend reporting stalking hours before the stabbing and a text that he was "on the verge." Daily Wire opens on James Talarico tying the verdict to a jury with no Black members. Did a judge bar those texts, or did both sides agree to keep both teenagers' backgrounds out?
Bottom line

Left-leaning outlets have not covered Anthony's court texts at all, so their readers never see the 75-page notice Fox News describes of threats and gun videos the jury never heard.

The Right View
Breitbart, citing The Daily Mail, reported that court documents include texts in which Anthony allegedly said he despised Black women, made anti-gay remarks, and preferred Donald Trump to Joe Biden, plus videos of him posing with firearms and pointing a gun at a house; it noted prosecutors did not introduce the texts at trial and that publication comes during his appeal. Fox News described the same May 8, 2026 notice in detail: alleged stalking reports the morning of the killing, messages such as “im lowk on the verge,” threats to shoot or assault Perez and others, photos and videos with guns, talk of robberies and bringing a gun and knife to school, and alleged misconduct dating to his school years in Baton Rouge. Fox stated the notice is not a judicial finding that the acts occurred and that some screenshots are partial, and said it sought comment from defense attorney Russell Wilson. The Daily Wire treated the filings as contradicting claims that Anthony was a victim of a racist system, quoting Texas Senate candidate James Talarico on the lack of Black jurors and arguing that political and celebrity narratives ignored a long record of alleged violent statements; it also reported a “gentleman’s agreement” not to air negative background evidence about either teenager.
Our Take (balanced)
The story is substantive: it rests on a named prosecutor filing, named people, specific dates, and quoted messages and videos reported from court records, not on one party’s uncorroborated word. Established: Anthony’s murder conviction and 35-year sentence, the pending appeal, that prosecutors compiled this extraneous-offense notice, and that the jury did not see the material. Alleged, and not found as fact by a court: that Anthony authored every quoted text, committed the prior threats, assaults, and weapons incidents described, and that partial screenshots fully represent the exchanges—the notice itself warns it is not a judicial finding. No left-leaning outlet has reported this. Watch next for the full unredacted filings, a defense response, whether the appeal addresses the excluded evidence, and independent corroboration of the texts and videos.
