What happened

On a Friday afternoon in the Bronx, off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes, 33, was stabbed seven times during an attempted robbery while unloading items from his car. Police identified the suspects as D'Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, who allegedly approached on an e-bike, tried to steal Mercedes' gold chain, then fled; both remain at large. Mercedes was hospitalized at Jacobi Medical Center and later walked out under his own power. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch visited him in the hospital. Department of Homeland Security sources said both suspects are from the Dominican Republic and entered the United States illegally.
Sourcing check · Fully on the record · 3 articles

3 of 3 articles cite a named source for the story. It was on the record from the first report.

What these terms mean and how they're counted
On the record · names a source 3 of 3
On the record means the article cites a source by name for the story's main claim: a person, or an institution speaking officially, such as a company statement or a named agency's spokesperson. The opposite is an unnamed source. The count is how many of the counted articles cite at least one such source; the names are everyone named across them, each once however the articles spell it. Here: Markwayne Mullin, NYPD, US Marshals Service, Lynn District Court and Department of Homeland Security
Primary evidence · cites a document or data 2 of 3
Primary evidence means the article cites a record you could check yourself: a court filing or ruling, a dataset or report, a recording or transcript, an official statement or press release, market data. A quote is not a document. The count is how many articles cite one. Here: police report, news report, court appearance, arrest records
Credits another outlet 0 of 3
The article says the story comes from another outlet's reporting (“first reported by Reuters”). Those articles relay the story; they are not independent confirmation. Here: Each article presents its own reporting.
Unnamed sources 1 of 3
The main claim is attributed to people who are not identified: “people familiar with the matter”, “officials said”. The count is how many articles do this.
How it developed
When the first report landed and whether it named anyone; when the first named source and the first document appeared. Here: First report Oct 7, 01:03 UTC by Breitbart, naming its source. First document 16 hours later, from Daily Wire (police report).
Not counted 0
Opinion, analysis and video pieces, and articles too short to assess. Every count above is out of the counted articles. An article republished under a new headline is one article.
This is about who is cited, not whether the story is true. Each source below says what it names. How we count
BLINDSPOT. Only right-leaning outlets are covering this story — the other side's media is silent.
Omitted — what each side leaves out

Unpacked

Left-leaning coverage has not reported the Bronx attack at all. Right-leaning coverage identifies the wanted suspects as people who entered the country illegally from the Dominican Republic. One of them, that coverage says, had already been ordered deported. A reader of left-leaning outlets therefore misses both the stabbing of the off-duty detective and the prior ICE hold on a suspect. Right-leaning coverage splits what it puts up front after the stabbing itself. Daily Wire highlights the detective walking out of the hospital. Breitbart highlights city rules that would not honor a detainer. The hospital sendoff does not appear in Breitbart, and the sanctuary explanation does not appear in Daily Wire. Why was a man already ordered deported still free in the Bronx when the detective was stabbed?
Bottom line

Left-leaning coverage has not mentioned the Bronx stabbing of an NYPD detective. Breitbart reports that one of the wanted men had an ICE detainer the city did not honor.

The Right View
The Daily Wire, Breitbart, and cited Fox News reporting say both suspects crossed the Arizona border illegally in late 2022 and early 2023 and were released into the country. They report prior New York arrests: Mejia had a weapons case, an ICE detainer that was not honored, and a deportation order; Caraballo had multiple arrests including gun possession and menacing, with ICE saying it often learned of the cases too late to file detainers. Coverage frames the attack around federal release at the border and New York sanctuary rules, quotes the detective's uncle criticizing courts for putting suspects back on the street, and cites DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin calling for local cooperation with ICE. Outlets also reported Mercedes' recovery and a large NYPD presence at the hospital.
Our Take (balanced)
The story is substantive: it names a victim, two suspects, a time and place, and ties immigration and arrest details to DHS sources and local records rather than a single uncorroborated claim. The assault, hospitalization, public discharge, and manhunt are established by NYPD statements and hospital events; illegal entry, prior arrests, the ICE detainer, and the deportation order are official claims as reported but are not reproduced here from primary documents. The robbery and stabbing remain alleged while the suspects are at large. No left-leaning outlet has reported this. Watch for NYPD warrants or charging papers, ICE/DHS primary records on entry and detainers, capture of the suspects, and any official city comment on the detainer.
