What happened

On Monday the White House released declassified records from an FBI investigation code-named Plasmic Echo into whether former President Donald Trump retained classified documents after leaving office. In March 2022, then-FBI Director Christopher Wray sought, and then-Attorney General Merrick Garland approved on a recommendation from then-Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, a Sensitive Investigative Matter focused on records at Mar-a-Lago; FBI agents searched the Palm Beach estate on August 8, 2022. Internal emails from late May and June 2022 instructed agents to determine Melania Trump’s and Barron Trump’s travel, including aircraft type and timeline, and stated that any warrant would be served after Trump left the property. Separate records show that from February to May 2023 the FBI compiled logs of incoming and outgoing calls, missed calls, texts, and voicemails on Trump adviser Susie Wiles’s cellphone, including contacts with defense lawyers, campaign aides, and journalists, around her April 7, 2023 interview. Special counsel Jack Smith later oversaw the documents case, which was dropped after Trump won the 2024 election.
Sourcing check · Fully on the record · 3 articles

3 of 3 articles cite a named source for the story. It was on the record from the first report.

What these terms mean and how they're counted
On the record · names a source 3 of 3
On the record means the article cites a source by name for the story's main claim: a person, or an institution speaking officially, such as a company statement or a named agency's spokesperson. The opposite is an unnamed source. The count is how many of the counted articles cite at least one such source; the names are everyone named across them, each once however the articles spell it. Here: Lauren Bis and Merrick Garland
Primary evidence · cites a document or data 2 of 3
Primary evidence means the article cites a record you could check yourself: a court filing or ruling, a dataset or report, a recording or transcript, an official statement or press release, market data. A quote is not a document. The count is how many articles cite one. Here: declassified documents, official report, email
Credits another outlet 0 of 3
The article says the story comes from another outlet's reporting (“first reported by Reuters”). Those articles relay the story; they are not independent confirmation. Here: Each article presents its own reporting.
Unnamed sources 0 of 3
The main claim is attributed to people who are not identified: “people familiar with the matter”, “officials said”. The count is how many articles do this.
How it developed
When the first report landed and whether it named anyone; when the first named source and the first document appeared. Here: First report Oct 5, 21:39 UTC by Fox News, naming its source. First document in the first report, from Fox News (declassified documents).
Not counted 0
Opinion, analysis and video pieces, and articles too short to assess. Every count above is out of the counted articles. An article republished under a new headline is one article.
This is about who is cited, not whether the story is true. Each source below says what it names. How we count

Unpacked

Left-leaning coverage has not reported the declassified Plasmic Echo files at all. Right-leaning coverage says the FBI timed the Mar-a-Lago search around Melania and Barron Trump's travel and later logged Susie Wiles' calls with lawyers and aides. Agents were told to finalize the family's aircraft and timeline so any warrant would be served after the former president left, according to Fox News. A reader of only left-leaning outlets would not know those records exist, or that the attorney general approved the probe after a warning it could disrupt the democratic process. Right-leaning outlets split on method, with Daily Caller saying the FBI tapped Wiles' phone and Fox News describing compiled call logs. What legal process authorized the real-time monitoring of Wiles' phone?
Bottom line

Fox News cites declassified FBI emails on Melania and Barron Trump's travel before the Mar-a-Lago raid, a file dump left-leaning outlets have not reported.

The Right View
Fox News, The Daily Wire, and The Daily Caller report that Biden-era FBI and Justice Department officials tracked Melania and Barron Trump’s movements while planning the Mar-a-Lago raid and later monitored Susie Wiles’s phone in real time. They highlight a Wray memo noting such investigations could be disruptive to the democratic process, Garland’s approval, and FBI Washington Field Office warnings that prosecutors lacked probable cause for a search. The outlets quote White House spokesperson Lauren Bis calling the surveillance a "disgraceful abuse of government power" and "weaponization of law enforcement," note the raid’s timing months before Trump announced his 2024 run, and place Plasmic Echo alongside other Trump-related probes including Arctic Frost.
Our Take (balanced)
The story is substantive: it rests on named officials, dated emails, a named code-word investigation, and records the White House says it declassified, not a single party’s uncorroborated word. Established from the described files is that raid-planning checklists included Trump family travel and that Wiles’s call and message logs were compiled in 2023. The claim that this was illegal spying or political weaponization is alleged by the current White House and has not been adjudicated. No left-leaning outlet has reported this. Watch for the full document set, independent confirmation of whether the logs captured content or only records, and responses from Garland, Wray, Smith, or the FBI.
