What happened

On Sunday, actor Matthew McConaughey posted an Instagram video arguing that an independent vote is not a wasted vote and that a handful of independent lawmakers could shift the balance of power in Washington. During a Wednesday interview on the podcast High Stakes with journalist Kara Swisher, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized that video. Clinton said it was “really unfortunate” that someone with McConaughey’s reach would, two weeks before midterm elections she described as aimed at stopping President Donald Trump, suggest independent candidates as a better choice. She said Democrats represent “every kind of American” and that not voting for Democrats would give Trump two more unchecked years. Fox News Digital contacted McConaughey’s representative and did not immediately receive a response.
Sourcing check · Fully on the record · 3 articles

3 of 3 articles cite a named source for the story. It was on the record from the first report.

What these terms mean and how they're counted
On the record · names a source 3 of 3
On the record means the article cites a source by name for the story's main claim: a person, or an institution speaking officially, such as a company statement or a named agency's spokesperson. The opposite is an unnamed source. The count is how many of the counted articles cite at least one such source; the names are everyone named across them, each once however the articles spell it. Here: Hillary Clinton, Kara Swisher and Matthew McConaughey
Primary evidence · cites a document or data 0 of 3
Primary evidence means the article cites a record you could check yourself: a court filing or ruling, a dataset or report, a recording or transcript, an official statement or press release, market data. A quote is not a document. The count is how many articles cite one. Here: None cited.
Credits another outlet 0 of 3
The article says the story comes from another outlet's reporting (“first reported by Reuters”). Those articles relay the story; they are not independent confirmation. Here: Each article presents its own reporting.
Unnamed sources 0 of 3
The main claim is attributed to people who are not identified: “people familiar with the matter”, “officials said”. The count is how many articles do this.

Omitted — what each side leaves out

Unpacked

Left-leaning coverage has not reported Hillary Clinton's podcast rebuke of Matthew McConaughey, so those readers would not know she argued that supporting independents now would leave Trump unchecked. Right-leaning coverage carries her remark that a star with such reach making that case so close to the midterms is "unfortunate." She is also quoted saying Americans must elect Democrats or Trump will do whatever he wants. Those same reports describe his Instagram challenge to the idea that an independent ballot is wasted. Right-leaning coverage splits on how much of McConaughey's case to print. The scolding leads at Fox News. The competing write-up at Breitbart instead quotes him calling independent the "original road." Which independent candidates, if any, did McConaughey ask voters to consider before the midterms?
Bottom line

Clinton went after McConaughey on the High Stakes podcast for boosting independents — a clash carried by Fox News and absent from left-leaning coverage.

The receipts — 3 facts one side's coverage lacks
  • McConaughey said the country's birth certificate is the Declaration of Independence, not a Declaration of Compromise contextin Breitbart · absent from left-leaning coverage
  • Kara Swisher told Clinton she did not think McConaughey articulated the appeal of independent candidates well enough contextin Fox News, New York Post · absent from left-leaning coverage
  • Clinton said Democrats are representing every kind of American in these elections official statementin Fox News, New York Post, Breitbart · absent from left-leaning coverage
The Right View
Fox News, the New York Post, and Breitbart reported Clinton’s remarks as a scolding or lecture of McConaughey for complicating Democratic midterm efforts. All three outlets quote McConaughey’s claim that independents should be treated as potential winners, not spoilers, and Clinton’s statements that Democrats must be elected to check Trump. They note Clinton’s appearance on Swisher’s podcast, recent Clinton campaigning for Democrats, and a Democratic strategist’s comment that the Clintons mainly reach the party base. Breitbart additionally labeled Clinton a two-time failed presidential candidate and included McConaughey’s lines that “independent is the original road” and that America’s founding document is the Declaration of Independence.
Our Take (balanced)
The story is substantive: it involves named public figures, a posted social-media video, and recorded podcast remarks that can be checked against the original sources. Established facts are that McConaughey posted the independent-candidate video and that Clinton made the quoted criticism on High Stakes; McConaughey’s response is not in the reporting. No left-leaning outlet has reported this. Watch for McConaughey’s comment, a full podcast transcript or clip, and whether other outlets independently confirm the remarks.
