What happened

Apple on Monday began rolling out iOS 27 to iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and later devices, alongside watchOS 27, iPadOS 27, and visionOS 27. The headline feature is Siri AI, a delayed overhaul of the Siri assistant that launched as an English-only beta, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support planned for October. Apple said the new assistant can hold longer conversations, pull context from Mail, Messages, and other apps, and is available through a dedicated Siri AI app; the most advanced Apple Intelligence tools require an iPhone 15 Pro or later. The update also adds a Liquid Glass opacity slider, redesigned parental controls including Ask to Browse and category-based Screen Time limits, AI photo-editing tools, natural-language Shortcuts creation, and claimed speed gains for app launches, Photos, and AirDrop. Business Insider reported that macOS 27 arrived the same day.
Sourcing check · Fully on the record · 2 articles

1 of 1 article cites a named source for the story. It was on the record from the first report.

What these terms mean and how they're counted
On the record · names a source 1 of 1
On the record means the article cites a source by name for the story's main claim: a person, or an institution speaking officially, such as a company statement or a named agency's spokesperson. The opposite is an unnamed source. The count is how many of the counted articles cite at least one such source; the names are everyone named across them, each once however the articles spell it. Here: Chris McKenna
Primary evidence · cites a document or data 0 of 1
Primary evidence means the article cites a record you could check yourself: a court filing or ruling, a dataset or report, a recording or transcript, an official statement or press release, market data. A quote is not a document. The count is how many articles cite one. Here: None cited.
Credits another outlet 0 of 1
The article says the story comes from another outlet's reporting (“first reported by Reuters”). Those articles relay the story; they are not independent confirmation. Here: Each article presents its own reporting.
Unnamed sources 0 of 1
The main claim is attributed to people who are not identified: “people familiar with the matter”, “officials said”. The count is how many articles do this.
How it developed

Not counted 1
Opinion, analysis and video pieces, and articles too short to assess. Every count above is out of the counted articles. An article republished under a new headline is one article.
This is about who is cited, not whether the story is true. Each source below says what it names. How we count
ONE-SIDED THIS WEEK. Only left-leaning outlets have covered this story in the last two days; Fox News reported it on 2026-09-11.
Omitted — what each side leaves out

Unpacked

Left-leaning coverage never mentions that the new Siri is built on Google's Gemini models, and right-leaning outlets had not covered iOS 27 at all as of publication. Those left outlets report an overhaul of the assistant and a Liquid Glass opacity slider. They split on kid safety, because The Verge never mentions those tools while Business Insider notes that a child looking for a workaround may still find one. A reader of the silent side therefore misses the launch and that Gemini omission. Business Insider calls the release Apple's "big bet that it can keep pace with rival AI assistants." The Verge calls the same feature "the delayed AI-powered overhaul." Who processes a user's mail and messages when the new Siri looks them up?
Bottom line

Right-leaning outlets have not covered iOS 27, so their readers missed both Business Insider's "big bet" framing of Siri and the Gemini models underneath it.

The Left View
The Verge and Business Insider framed the release as Apple’s delayed AI catch-up, with Siri AI as the centerpiece across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. The Verge listed companion-OS features, device compatibility, and smaller interface changes such as new icons, extra-large widgets, and the Liquid Glass slider. Business Insider emphasized Siri’s new capabilities, a standalone Siri app, AI writing and photo tools, and, in a separate piece, parental controls, quoting Protect Young Eyes CEO Chris McKenna as welcoming easier Screen Time tools while noting children can still circumvent them. TechCrunch, in a hands-on account, reported that Siri is now useful for complex, on-screen, and multi-step requests, that it is built on Google’s Gemini models rather than Apple’s prior ChatGPT integration, and highlighted quality-of-life changes including a new clipboard paste shortcut and intelligent Wi-Fi-to-cellular switching.
Our Take (balanced)
The story is substantive: it is a dated software release with named products, compatibility lists, a quoted Apple executive (Mike Rockwell, VP of Siri engineering), and specific, checkable feature claims. What is established in the reporting is that Apple shipped iOS 27 and companion updates with a Siri AI beta and the other features listed above. What remains Apple’s unverified marketing, not independent measurement, includes the 30 percent, 70 percent, and 80 percent speed claims and the assertion that Siri is now a profoundly more capable assistant. TechCrunch’s report that Siri AI is built on Google’s Gemini models is a significant technical claim that the other outlets in this set did not independently document. No right-leaning outlet has reported this. Watch for independent reviews and benchmarks, Apple or Google confirmation of the model stack, third-party app support after launch, the October language expansion, and whether the parental-control changes hold up under real-world testing.
